Greg Murphy: Cool Water

Greg Murphy shows his modal moods, playing keyboards and synths with a core of Eric Wheeler/b, Jeff “Tain” Watts/dr and various guests on this mix of originals and a wide range of covers. Of the latter, He brings in Ku-umba Frank Lacy for a Donald Fagin-voiced reading of the Steely Dan hit “ Golden Earring” while Lacy gets funky on the Isley  Brothers’ “Coolin’ Me Out”. TK Blue brings his flute in along with some guests delivering African chants on the rich and exotic “Enkare Nairbi” and Bill Ware adds good vibes to the nifty “Friendships”. Murphy’s fingers stretch out a la McCoy Tyner alongside Wheeler’s bass on a swaying Impulse!-tribute of “Chim Chim Cher-ee” whle “Cuttin’s Trane’s Corners” is a rich avalanche of energy. The closing “You Decide” is a fun and funky closer, showing the range of Murphy’s grasp. A fun ride!
