Charles Colizza Group: Hug The Devil

Having honed his skills with the likes of Alan Broadbent and Peter Bernstein, French-Canadian guitarist Charles Colizza fronts his own team of Billy Drewes/ss, Jake D’Ambra/ts, Nick Panoutsos/b and Lukas Akintaya/dr for a collection of mostly originals and a standard. The latter is a dark and tensile rocking version of “What Is This Thing Called Love” that has Panoutsos handing the baton to Colizza for some urgent tones, pulsated on by Drewes’ straight sax. The album is bookended by a buildup and release of agony after some tonic trickles on “Ground Zero” and some eerie and lonely musings with guitar and bass along with D’Ambra’s jagged tenor before the chaos fades to calm on the title piece. Panoutsos is featured in nice dialogue with the leader on a cheerful and Latin “Line’s Celebration (Birthday Song)” and the team is fluid and warm with D’Ambra blowing grey smoke rings on “Stiff Breeze”. Clever charts and a wide range of emotions.
