Horizons Jazz Orchestra: Plays The Music of Lee Harris-“The Brite Side”

All stars Carl Saunders/tp and  Billy Ross/ts-fl-cl are heavily featured on this album by the Horizons Jazz Orchestra conducted by Michael Balogh and most of the tunes cleverly arranged by Lee Harris. Saunders on trumpet and Ross on tenor glide over a samba’d take of a Billy Strayhorn tune renamed “A Train Bossa” with some muted horns and rich solos by Dennis Noday/tp and Joe Mileti/ts creating a pastoral mood on “Maria”. Grey clouds hover over “Summertime” while the puffy cirrus ones float for Saunders on “Pure Imagination”. Most fun is a revamping of “After You’ve Gone” with some humorous soulful punches by the horns on  “ After You’ve Gone, Finally” while the team gets funky on the title “The Brite Side”. Charts for the heart.
