TELL YO MAMA…The Flying Horse Big Band: Florida Rays

Brother Ray Charles is celebrated by the Flying Horse Big Band, with some foot stomping reads of tunes from all periods of the icon’s career. The Jeff Rupert-directed 18+ member band shuffles and swings to wailing Hammond breezes on instrumentals like the boogie-ing “One Mint Julep” and the funky as all get out “Watermelon Man”. There’s a rotating team of vocalists, with both Rob Paparozzi and Vance Villastrigo filled with grit and hep cat growl, Paparozzi filled with jive on”Let The Good Times Roll” Villastrigo pleading on the percolating “Unchain My Heart” and the two joining together on the big and bold swagger of “It Should’ve Been Me”. Khristian Dentley preaches it on “(It’s Not Easy) Being Green” and Davonda Simmons growls out “Hit The Road  Jack” and teams up with Villastrago on a swaying “What’d I Say”. Last year’s tribute to Batman was a hoot, and this one’s even better. This band’s as tasty as dry rub ribs at Memphis’ Germantown Commissary.
