Pericopes +1: Up

Emiliano Vernizzi plays a Sonny Rollins-thick tenor saxophone, as well as bringing in some electronics, with keyboardist and pianist Alessandro Sgobbio doing the same with drummer Nick Wight on these mostly  band-composed  pieces. The three give a wide variety of sounds and moods in this trio setting, ranging from a melodic and traditional hard bop sound with Sgobbio on piano on the plaintive and lyrical “Wonderland” and warm “Gorod Malinov” to some muscular and assertively charged “Martyrlied” with Vernizzi’s tenor screeching over the caustic keys. The three go rapid fire on”Disco Gagarin” while contrasting with spacious electronic space effects during “The Earth’s Shape”. The sole cover, a read of “Sultans Of Swing” has the tenorist going for a big bel canto sound as the team slows the piece down to a reflection. Big sounds.
