Calm guitar waters are created by guitarist John Stein as he mixes and matches with Daniel Grajew/p-key, Frank Herzberg/b, Ze Eduardo Nazario/dr and Teco Cardoso/ss-as-fl on a collection of standards and originals. He shows his sleek bop chops on a sleek “Kobe’ as well as teaming with a beefy Cardoso on Joe Henderson’s “The Kicker”. Soft sounds with string and flute give a sweet samba to “Rio Escuro” and the team is coy on his own “Charlotte” as well. An apropos “Waltz” by Jim Hall is given a spacious treatment with Stein’s influence shown in abundance, while Herzberg’s line creates a deft and tasty “Taste of Honey”. Understated charms abound.
