Quite Frankly: Introducing Sam Hirsh

Pianist Sam Hirsh debuts on this trio/quartet album of mostly originals with the team of John Webber/b, Kevin Kanner/dr and guest Ralph Moore/ts. Hirsh has a nice swinging pulse to his playing, bopping hard on the shuffling “No C!” and bluesy to the hip “Quite Frankly”. His hands have a nice stretch on the rich chords of the bluesy “Kyoto Shuffle” and is coy with Webber’s bass on the pretty standard “Look For The Silver Lining”. With Moore on tenor, the team goes into an exotic Coltrane-ish rubato on “Song For Sophie” and gets assertively modal for “Ways of The Wise” while flexing their muscles on  “Pop’s Delight”. A strong current in the mainstream.
