Misha Tsiganov: Playing With The Wind

Pianist Misha Tsiganov leads a post bop team of Alex Sipiagin/tp-fh, Seamus Blake/ts, Matt Brewer/b and Dan Weiss/dr through some well crafted originals and cleverly arranged jazz standards. He has a warm touch on the ivories, leaning towards lyricism as demonstrated on the short solo piece “Dream Catcher,” but he conveys the same melodic breath on his own “Orange Dream” and on the rich Russian folk song “ To Ne Veter Vetku Klonit.” The two horns are breathy and ebullient, whether weaving through the intricate piano line of the title track or creating a soft mist on “The Very Thought of You.” A couple of Wayne Shorter tunes show the nimble foot work of the team, as the hop and skip over the herky jerky “Witch Hunt” and tick tock to “Virgo.” The team handles all of the tricky obstacle course of lines without dropping a stitch, and swing all the way to the finish line. Strong and original.
