Composer Rick Baitz brings three diverse pieces for interpretation on this release. A 22 minute “Chhonic Dances for String Quartet has Joyce Hamman/vi, Mary Rowell/vi, Beth Meyers/va and Ashley Bathgate/cel creating rich textures and panoramic harmonies that are almost organ like in their textures. A Hall of Mirrors has a percussion quartet and electronics mixing together with Brian Shank, Christian Lundqvist, Jeremy Smith and Brian Shankar Adler combining rumbles and grooves while Baitz’s computer adds flows and ripples for 14+ minutes of percolating contemplation and exoticism. Modern musings with Ken Thomson/cl, Jessica Meyer/va and Stephen Gosling/p make “Into Light” a collection of moody and eerie abstractions, with suspenseful long tones forming long shadows. Thoughtful and dreamy.
