Boney James: Honestly

Saxist and composer Boney James delivers solid smooth jazz with an R&B feel on this album that has him featured on a trio of various reeds. He features the rich voice of Avery*Sunshine on the title romantic title track with his silky alto, while his tenor sax floats along Eric Roberson’s contributions on “If I Can’t Hold You.” The band delivers a Dobie Gray type of drifting feel with some nice guitar licks on the soulful “Low and Slow”  and on soprano, he gets Kenny G-ish on the synthetic percussion vibe of “Kicks.” Best of all is a creative read of the classic “Skylark”  with soft and fluid musical mist, contrasted with a Headhunters funky on ”We Came to Party.” Sleek and shiny as chrome on a 57 Bel Air.
