BRAZILIA! Mas Que Nada: Sea Journey

The breezy Brazilian band Mas Que Nada includes the lithe and rich voices of Monica Pabelonio with Kevin Dorta, sometimes in unison or alternating, each to wonderful effect. The pulsating rhythm team of Alex Snyder/perc, Jordan Otto/dr, Henry Rensch/b, Alfredo Balcacer/g and Anthony Healy/p is supplemented by the horn section of Andrew Strzyzewski/as-fl, Elliot Bild/tp and Sam Pilnick/ts, and they do wonders with ices like the famed Sergio Mendes titular name as well as a lusciously wistful take of The Beatles’ “If I Fell I Love.” Dorta is wonderfully nasal on the jazzy “Pablo Pueblo” and rich and dramatic with Pabelonio with keyboards and percussion on Chick Corea’s title track. The voices slither with delight with the saucy percussion on “Pink” while the rapid pulse gets intoxicating on “Bala Com Bala.” This is a daiquiri of a drink!
