Brian Dickinson: The Rhythm Method

Canadian pianist Brian Dickinson leads an impressive ost bop band of Luis Deniz/as, Kelly Jefferson/ts, Neil Swainson/b and Ted Warren/dr through ten originals. It appears that the pianist/leader has an affinity for the Cool School sounds originated from Lennie Tristano,as not only is one of the pieces named after him (Lennie’s Loonies”), but other pieces as well such as “It’s Hugh Or Nolan” and “stepping Out” feature the signature serpentine twin lines of saxes veering in and out of each other before splintering away into solos.

Jefferson has a thick touch and Deniz is on the s lightly bright side on the  hip “Orion” and the team digs deep into the swirling “Trane Trip.” Dickinson shows his noir shadows on the lurking’Moonshine” while the team digs into a sleek groove on “Open Season.” Swinging with the cerebrum.
