The music is frisky and angular, with kinetic and quirky moments reminiscent of Thelonious Monk at his most playful. On flute, Webber wisps through fragments like “Meme” and the sharp points of “Tug O’ War” while her husky tenor puffs on the acute angles or “Underwhelmed” and “Rectangles 3a”. Mitchell and Hollenbeck are crisp and sharp together, making the concise pieces ricochet like 38 caliber bullets bouncing off a rock. Duck down, or you might get hit by shrapnel!
