Tigran Hamasyan: Mockroot

Here’s a release that takes you through a variety of moods and atmospheres. Tigran Hamasyan brings a voice and selection of various keyboards along with a band of Sam Minaie/b and Arthur Hnatek/dr on this collection of originals. Sometimes he creates thoughtful moods with wordless vocals as on “To Love” that might make you feel like you’re listening to an Enja album, and then before you know it, you get a hard rocking trio that grabs you by the throat on “Song for Melan and Rafik” and “Entertain Me.” He shows a more lyrical side on “Kars 1” and “Kars 2” which take you on a dream of an adventure, while “But of the Grid” takes you back and forth between the sublime and the aggressive. A hint of home folk sounds comes up in a rich piece “The Apple Orchard in Saghmasavanq” so this band has a plethora of directions that either shows lots of ideas for this band to further explore.
