OLD SCHOOL CHRISTMAS…Perry Como: The Classic Christmas Album, Johnny Mathis: The Classic Christmas Album, Frank Sinatra: The Classic Christmas Album, Barbra Streisand: The Classic Christmas Album

Wanna hear Christmas songs the way they’re supposed to be done, and DON’T want another Michael Buble’ album? Check out these four from Sony Legacy, and get the real deal…

Perry Como makes Christmas feel as cozy as wool mittens here, with his beloved baritone cooing over tunes like “Silver Bells” and a lilting “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” He sounds as relaxed as Santa on Egg Nog on “Winter Wonderland” and “(There’s No Place Like” Home For The Holidays,” while coming across like an altar boy on “O Holy Night.” Vintage!

Johnny Mathis brings his intimate and lonely as a kitten in a tree voice here with fun and joyful takes of “Sleigh Ride” and “The Christmas Waltz.” A couple of lesser known tunes are featured here, and they work well with “Sign of the Dove” and a frolicking “Calypso Noel”and he even does a credible duet with Bette Midler. He’s one of the few vocalists that owns “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and Dec 25th is better off for it. Like a sparkling Christmas tree.

Frankie-boy Sinatra embodies the holiday with his reading of “Adeste Fideles” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” and sounds as sincere as a Salvation Army Santa on “O Little Town of Bethlehem. “ A couple of previously unissued songs include a duet with Dorothy Kirsten on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” and a joyful “Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!”  Could it really be Christmas without Frank under the mistletoe?

Barbra Streisand does Christmas? Hey, Jesus was Jewish, so why not? Actually Yentl sounds great on a take of “Sleep in Heavenly Peace (Silent Night)” and even more convincing on two different readings of “Ave Maria.” She glows like the star in Bethlehem on “I Wonder as I Wander” while gets fun and playful on “What Are You Doing New Years Eve?”.  Again, some more obscure tunes work well, from “One God” to “The Best Gift” making this an impressive Main Event.
