Saxophonist Joe McPhee’s trio with bassist Dominic Duval and drummer Jay Rosen. “Rapture” is the breathtaking closing twelve-minute track which follows a forty-eight minute take on “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Hertlein has played with these guys before, and, as when I’ve heard her live, her violin is exciting. Duval has an affinity for playing well with other strings, most notably Jason Kao Hwang and Tomas UIrich, and here the interplay with Hertlein is breathtaking. The short opening bass solo, “Elegy: Upon Mourning” is dedicated to Ned Rorem’s loss of his lover, and a perfect lead-in to “Lift,” whose melody comes in an out of the free play and is played straight by McPhee about thirty minutes in. www.cadencebuilding.com.
