Steve Kahn

Guitarist Steve Kahn’s latest disc could be summed up by a line by Woody Allen in the movie “Annie Hall”, “A relationship is like a shark; it has to keep moving forward to survive. What you are looking at here is a dead shark.” Even though he is supported by a plethora of first rate musicians, and a diverse collection of tunes, the entire disc sounds quite lifeless and uninspiring. May be it is the mix: McCoy Tyner’s “Hymn Song” features solo percussion work that is almost indistinguishable from the rest of the band. Randy Brecker’s flugelhorn can’t even saved the monochromatic ballad “Face Value”; the song drags when it should charm. Monk’s “I Mean You” and Coleman’s “Mr. and Mrs People” were lacking in any sort of dynamism. Kahn has over 20 cds in his catalogue. Please don’t ad this one to yours.
