BOBBY SANABRIA BIG BAND
Afro-Cuban Dream...live & in clave
Arabesque

There’s a palpable excitement from this twenty-piece band recorded live at Birdland. Tenor John Stubblefield guests on three cuts, but his solos are just okay until the closer. Others I’m familiar with are the leader and trombonists Chris Washburne and Joe Fiedler, the former offering his “Nuyorican Son,” a pun on the montuno son rhythm. Cándido joins on conga for a tight “Manteca,” the closing blow-out which also has Stubblefield blasting fire in that the notes call “screech tenor.” Soprano Jay Collins digs deep on “Olokún/Yemayá.” Truly interesting is the mambo arrangement of “Donna Lee” which is a blast; excellent solo from trumpeter Michael Mossman. Karolina Strassmayer scintillates throughout on saxes. Good mainstream Afro-Cuban big band, like Sanabria’s previous disc, “¡NYC Aché!” but more swinging. www.arabesquerecords.com.
