Muiza
Adnet
Sings Moacir Santos
Adventure Music
Composer/arranger Moacir Santos, who passed away just after the recording
of this wonderful cd, was one of the few Brazilian stars overlooked by
the US powers that be. 2005’s “Choros & Alegria”
was a fine collection of his work, but this one, featuring the alluring
and rich voice of Muiza Adnet is even better. Her captivating voice envelopes
these charming melodies, and the arrangements, varying from the simple
to the dense, serve as the perfect presentation of Santos’ music.
The delicate playfulness with guitarist Ricardo Silveira and pianist Marcos
Nimrichter on “Lembre-se”, or the sublime duet with pianist
Gabriel on “Marchinha dos Santos Gloria” convey a precious
innocence that is captivating. The playful and flute laden “Se Voce
Disser Que Sim”, as well as the percussive “Off and On”
are simply framed structures, yet both pack a trunk load of treasures.
On each song, whether sung in English or Brazilian, Adnet is able to exude
warmth and comfort with every lyric. The name santos literally means “Set
Apart”, which is a good description for the quality of music on
this disc. It’s head and shoulders above much that is out there
today.
