Imagine a world without the rock and roll, or anything post Beatles and
Stones, and you get a hint of the music, feel and attitude of
singer/songwriter Lucy Woodward. And is that such a bad thing? She
doesn’t come across at all like some retro band, but more like an
artist who doesn’t desire the yeast of the Pharisees. Her voice, which
is a pleasant mix of wide-eyed charm and in-the-know playfulness, feels
completely comfortable in tunes ranging from the Prez Prado imbibed
“Sans Souci” to the Lesley Gore-ish “Another Woman.” She displays a
Keely Smith wisdom on the ratatating “He Got Away,” but can also coo
with the best on the Doo Wopping take of “Stardust.” Like a piece of
clove gum, she’s got a good kick, and the flavor lingers pretty well
afterwards.
