The
Marty Sheller Ensemble Trumpeter
Marty Sheller is probably best known for his work as Mongo Santamaira’s
musical director during the halcyon 60s. Rarely putting out anything on
his own, this “mini-big band” disc is a force to be reckoned
with. Including all stars like altoist Bobby Porcelli, who’s played
with everyone form Machito to Puente, and tenorist Bob Franceschini of
Michael Stern fame, Sheller arranged and produced this extroverted extravaganza,
as well as contributed some undeniably wealthy tunes. “Why Deny”
and “Sweet and Lovely” feature Porcelli’s signature
sound, and Wayne Shorter’s “Mahjong” is cleverly treated
by Franceschini along with Joe Magnarelli’s iridescent trumpet.
This disc will liven up any party and get you on the floor dancing in
seconds flat.
