By George W. Harris
Guitarist
Kurt Rosenwinkel is one of the handful of what we call
“important” post Metheny guitarists. He’s got his own
unique phrasing
and sound, and it works amazingly well. He put out that unbelievable
disc “Heartcore” that just amazed everyone, and had a cooking
quartet
with kindred spirit Mark Turner/ts. Since those days, Turner has left
to start the group Fly, and Rosenwinkel has played musical chairs with
record labels since being inexplicably dumped by Verve. He’s been
touring with his trio of Eric Revis/b and Eric Harland/dr; I’ve
seen
him in this setting, and he’s still got golden fingers.
This disc
could be the disc we’ve been waiting for. It’s spacious,
subdued and mixes eloquent soloing with symbiotic interplay and
teamwork. The songs are a mix of Monk, Shorter, standards and one
dreamy original. Monk’s “Reflections” and “Ask
Me Now” have a relaxed
and draped feel to them, while Shorter’s “Fall” and
“Ana Marie” have
smoothed and rounded edges. Rosenwinkel is patient and pensive on “You
Go To My Head” and “You’ve Changed” decorating
the tunes with
interesting intros and delicate interpretations. Calm and thoughtful,
this disc will fit to your form like a pair of Levis with each wear.
