Rigmor Gustafsson
Alone With You
ACT
By George W. Harris

Here’s a singer that’s original in the best sense of the word. First point in Rigmor Gustafsson’s favor, now brace yourself….NO GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK!!! NO VERSIONS OF “MY FUNNY VALENTINE!!! Get out the confetti! All of the songs are from her own pen, and they are quite enjoyable. Song moods range from the reflective and serene “It’s All There” to the guileless and funky optimism of “Special Effects”. Point number two in Ms. Gustafsson’s favor is her clear yet quirky voice. Her enunciation is confident, yet with that charming lilt that accompanies a European accent. All throughout the enjoyable disc, her voice is embracing, and draws you into the lyrics, as on the Joni Mitchellesque “Joy To Me.” Third and last point is the intimate and flexible working quartet. Pianist/organist Jonas Ostholm gives Schubertlike treatment to the quiet and calm tunes like “Still.” The band is also able to get snappy, as on the clever “Don’t Do It In Here” which is agreeable on many levels. This is her 4th major outing, and a great step forward for her and for singing in general. When’s she coming to town?
