SPECIAL
3 WEEKS OF REVIEWS WHILE I GO ON A MEDICAL MISSION TO HELP THE PERSECUTED
CHURCH IN THE MIDDLE EAST DURING LENT. Quadro Nuevo Here’s a band that’s been around a long time, and you probably don’t even know they exist. You need to get into them-they’re a gas! QN consists of Germans Mulo Francel/reeds, Robert Wolf/g, Andreas Hinterseher/accordion, and DD Lowka/b. Together, they play a mix of Django’s Hot Club, Carlos Gardel, Samba and minstrels from Piazza Navona that is infectious, swinging and buoyantly original. In the past, NQ has included a few movie tunes on their
discs, like “Miserlou” or “Windmills of Your Mind.”
This time, they’ve taken the plunge with both feet, making an entire
release of the genre. Some of the tunes, like “Volver” have
the classic gypsy feel, while “Spartacus” features some wonderfully
mournful bass clarinet. “Lawrence Of Arabia” is given a middle
eastern flair, which works amazingly well; you’ll think you’re
in a Saharan caravan; “Jean De Florette” takes you to the
romantic Left Bank with Hinterseher’s squeeze box emiting bohemian
voices. What’s that classic joke about hell being where the lovers
are German? This disc will put and end to that one. Great stuff!
