John Pondel is a cool/dry toned guitarist in the mold of Adam Rogers,
mixing a post-bop bend with dna-based swing.

This disc finds him with David Binney/as-fl, Marivaldos Dos Santos/perc
and Scott Colley/b for an up-to date reading of Brazilian/bossa music.
The tone is subdued and slightly dark, but still floats lightly with
Binney’s accompaniment on “Make It Nice” and “Mr. Obvious.” When they
work sans horn, the music gets a bit more silhouetted, but swings
nonetheless, as they clip along nicely on Horace Silver’s “The Jody
Grind” with an elastic snap. Nice to see some variations of the South
American theme from a guitarist who deserves a good listening.
