Bassist John
Patitucci, while performing as a “sideman” (in the
broadest sense of the word) with the likes of Wayne Shorter and Chick
Corea, continues to put out intriguing and artistically sophisticated
solo releases. Last year, he put out a disc that included string
sections; this time around he pares down with Brian Blade/dr and Joe
Lovano/ts-ac for an intimately interactive collection of tunes that
mixes clever grooves with passionate and explorative soloing.
The disc,
which includes dedications to numerous jazz legends, has a
“live” feel to it, and the interplay is palpable. “Sonny
Side” has a
joyful lilt that just doesn’t let go, while “Blues For Freddie”
snaps
like a popcorn popper. They all patiently strut together on the
agonizingly lazy “Play Ball” while deliver a heavy backbeat
on
“Messaien’s Gumbo. Lovano’s dusty tone is perfectly
suited for this
type of mood, while Patitucci and Blade, both God fearing churchmen,
work together like soul mates Jonathon and David. It’s evident
sonically that Patitucci dedicates his music to God; this stuff is
inspiring!
