Nnenna Freelon
Better Than Anything; The Quintessential Nnenna Freelon
Concord
By George W. Harris

She was on the scene before Dianne Krall, and she’ll still be up there in the top echelon after the likes of Norah Jones come and go. This collection of tracks from this wonderful lady’s previous Concord releases is a perfect gateway to one of the best pure vocalists around. Perfect in pitch, tone, mood and temperament, Ms. Freelon covers the gamut and the waterfront on this retrospective that dates back to 1996. A healthy portion of the tunes are from her classic “Soulcall” disc, featuring swinging, irresistible and joyful treatments of “Button Up Your Overcoat” and “One Child At a Time.” The vocal group Take 6 adds extra depth to a spirited take of “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, and the duet with pianist Brandon McCune on “Balm in Gilead” is warm and embracing. What sets Freelon apart from other vocalists is the palpable optimism and comfort that is an inherent part of her makeup. “Ooh Child” from the underrated “Church” disc of 2003, and “I Say A Little Prayer” are as comforting as a mother caressing an infant. Eventually you’ll want to get all of her releases, but this is an excellent start. She’s currently touring with the Monterey Jazz All Stars, and bringing the house down with her haunting vocals. Look for her coming to your town.
