Susan
Krebs & The Soaring Sextet Here’s an alluring idea that succeeds in execution. Vocalist Susan Krebs and musical director Rich Eames collaborated on a disc focusing on songs referring to our fine feathered friends. Supported by a swinging yet pastoral band, Krebs floats through tunes like Brubeck’s “Strange Meadowlark” and soars through a clever reading of the swing era “Bob White.” Various sounds of bird calls are interspersed throughout the session, with some of them actually creating the rhythm of the tune. A few instrumentals nest well; the version of Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending” is exhilarating, with Riner Scivally’s guitar grabbing the essence of the piece to perfection. Lennon/McCartney’s “Blackbird” is another highlight, feeling more inspiriting than the original. Even Hank Williams gets a shot, with a forlorn reading of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” that medleys into Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.” A fresh idea, great theme, and not a turkey in the lot.
