Iron City
Put The Flavor On It

The jazz trio Iron City is assumedly named after the classic recording by Grant Green, as this disc has that same groove as the Blue Note guitarist. The B3-guitar-drum trio of Beau Sasser, Charlie Apicella and Alan Korzin provide just under an hour’s worth of humming mid tempo burners, which include some great bluesy originals, as well as a couple of clever covers. Burt Bacharach’s “Walk On By” is a pleasant surprise, with some tasty guitar work by Apicella, while Jerry Butler’s “Hey, Western Union Man” bubbles like oatmeal on the Sasser’s Hammond. The band gives a good argument that while the piano trio may be the essence of jazz, the B3 trio may be it’s soul.
