Any time I get a jazz record that features the clarinet, my eyes immediately perk up, since they are so few and far between. The poor licorice stick seems to be on one of its ebbs of popularity, so anything that features it is a welcome addition.

Frank Glover has a nice classical tone, and he joins together with the elastic trio of Steve Allee/p Jakc Helsley/b and Bryson Kern/dr for the majority of the tunes, which consists of intricate and sophisticated post bop. The cleverly arranged “Concierto Para Quarteto” has dynamic, veering between neo-classical and jazz, and back again. A warm string orchestra is included on the Piston sounding “The Last Blue Tang” and a big band supports the leader on a Gil Evans-inspired “A Thousand Ships.” Nice to see the clarinet back in the swing of things.
