OK, just where has this guy BEEN?!? This singer/songwriter/pianist
put
out two fantastic discs of standards, sublimely mixed with his own
material, and seemed on his way to being the leader of the pack for
young male singers. My 20 year old daughter thought he was head and
shoulders above the likes of Buble, as he wrote insightful tunes, and
played with real feel. Then, suddenly after touring to support his
excellent On The Moon disc, he pulled a “Where’s Waldo”
and just
dropped out of circulation for a few years.
Well, he’s back, and something must have happened.
He’s switched
labels, from the jazz-oriented Concord to the more popular Warner
Brothers, and his music reflects it. Not that it’s a bad thing,
just
different. No more jazz standards; it’s all his own, and a lot of
the
songs are very insightful and mature. The songs have more of a pop/rock
edge, but the feel is still there. Songs like “Goodbye Philadelphia,”
“The Country Life” and “Be Careful” very successfully
bridge the
crooning Cincotti with the Billy Joel-ish one.
