Carly Simon
This Kind Of Love
Hear Music
By George W. Harris

After being LEGEND IN HER OWN TIME in the 70s, singer/composer Carly Simon seemingly dropped out of the music scene, putting out a sporadic disc of Songbooks once in awhile. A lot of people have been in ANTICIPATION of something new by this lady whose voice was the soundtrack for many our young lives. Judging by this new release, returning to writing her own material, and surrounding herself with some flexible pop/jazz musicians seems THE RIGHT THING TO DO for Ms. Simon. Her voice, aged and matured, doesn’t have the MOCKINGBIRD range of her pop days, but she wears it quite well on this interesting and varied set. She’s right at home with the folksy pop tunes like “Island” and is always at her best when sounding dreamy and vulnerable, as on “In My Dreams.” WE HAVE NO SECRETS that this has always been her strength through the years. What comes off most surprisingly well is her sultry latin tunes. “Hola Soleil”, “Island” and particularly the title tune create a whole new genre for Ms. Simon to explore. In fact, once hearing her caress these sambas, it’s easy to think THAT’S THE WAY I’VE ALWAYS HEARD IT SHOULD BE for Simon. Winning with a smile, she hasn’t lost her ability to touch a nerve with her vulnerable charm. If YOU’RE SO VAIN to think that you’ve outgrown the talents of Ms. Simon, give this delightful disc a chance to work its way into your heart.
