Hickory-toned guitarist Joshua Breakstone has put out some excellent
mainstream bop material with pianists like Barry Harris and Kenny
Barron. On this release, he goes for the openness of a trio with Lisle
Atkinson/b and Eliot Zigmund/dr, and the mix is fresh and open. The
originals like “For Me” and the title track give enough space for solo
and exploration, but without sounding indulgent; the music keeps you
listening and snapping your fingers. Jazz standards like “The Peacocks”
and “The Kicker” have marvelous interplay, and the lithe interplay
between everyone is sympathetic without being overly deferential. This
guy’s got a great sound, and works his solos well. Look for this guy!
