Neil Young
Here We Are In The Years; Neil Young’s Music Box
Sexy Intellectual DVD
www.chromedreams.com
By George W. Harris
Neil Young
just finished touring with his most famed incarnation, that
of a band member of Buffalo Springfield, and he was as in tune, hip and
rollicking as ever. This 2 hour documentary gives an excellent
explanation why. Going back to his original days as a “guitar geek”
trying to form an instrumental group like Dick Dale and the Deltones,
“Here We Are” painstakingly goes through every epoch, style,
influence
and direction in Young’s still inquisitive career. It shows how
he
always absorbed the musical styles around them, used them to create his
own unique path, and in the process earned the respect of fans,
critics, fellow musicians and even the younger generation of artists,
something achieved by very few artists.
Insight by
music writers, critics, musicians and, best of all, members
from his first band The Squires are interspersed between archival
footage of Young interviews an d performances ranging from Buffalo
Springfield to Pearl Jam. His ability to feel comfortable playing with
acts as diverse as grunge rockers, electronic synthesizer “Kraut
Rockers”
and country singers is what endears him to both his fans and fellow
musicians. His refusal to compromise his musical quest is well
exemplified here, and serves as an example for all of us on our
vocational journeys. Intriguing and useful on a multitude of levels in
life.
