Mark Weinstein Here’s
a guy that I discovered last year, and just love what he does; flutist
Mark Weinstein caught my eye with a snazzy latin disc called Timbasa,
and this latest one is just as good, if not better. He’s teamed
up with the well pedigreed team of Kenny Barron/p, Nilson Matta/b and
Marcello Pellitteri/dr-perc, and together, they samba and bossa through
some wonderful material. The expected Jobim material like “Triste”
is here, but what will catch your ear are the modern bop stuff, such as
joyful takes of Monk’s “I Mean You” and “Ruby
My Dear” and an ethereal reading of Miles Davis’ “Nefertiti”
that will stick with you like an after dinner liqueur. Weinstein’s
tone on his wide variety of flutes is warm and encompassing, and he never
overstays his welcome. You know it’s good when the hour of music
passes and you simply want more. Look for this one!
