“Mawaige…Mawaige is what bwings us togethah
today.”
Princess Bride
Something is definitely in the musical air, as there have
been some
real nice blues/roots releases lately. We’ve had Gregg Allman and
John
Cougar Mellencamp put out some real earthy sessions, and now the
husband and wife team of Susan Tedeschi/g-v and Derek Trucks/g ups the
ante with some second generation Allman Brothers-sounding music. The
happy couple leads an 11 piece team through some of the most sublime
soulful blues you’re ever going to here. Tedeschi’s got this
gorgeously
rich voice that sounds she’s one of your best friends just for hanging
out on tunes like “Learn How To Love” and “Simple Things.”
The feel all
throughout sounds like one of the old Delaney and Bonnie or Clapton
solo records; nice, loose and easy going like the gospel-ish “Don’t
Let
Me Slide” or the gentle and lazy “Midnight in Harlem.”
Trucks’ guitar
is as patient as a nursery day care director, never rushing through his
solos to prove some point, letting the fingers do the walking and
talking, as on the instrumental “Shrimp and Grits.” The horns,
keyboards and rhythm section is casual jam at it’s apotheosis, making
this one a disc you’ll cling to for a long time. Look high and low
for
it.
