Tomoko Sugawara No, this
is not technically “jazz” per se, but it sure is beautiful
music. Creating an album that is subtitled “Ancient and Modern Music
for the Kugo,” Ms. Sugawara has put together a luscious tapestry
of sounds with her harp-like instrument. The music is performed with a
spaciousness that is alluring and inviting. There are songs like “Aawl”
from the 14th century that also include Ozar Aksoys darabukka, while “Shakugo,”
a more modern piece, has Robert Dick’s feathery alto flute. The
music has moments of quiet structure intermingled with pensive improvisations,
making for contemplative listening. Relaxing, yet complex, this is one
you’ll cherish for awhile.
