The O’Farrill
Brothers Grandsons
of Chico and sons of Arturo, brothers Adam/tp and Zack/dr lead a post-bop
quintet along with Livio Almeida/ts, Zaccai Curtis/p and Michael Sacks/p
that is filled with original compositions and ideas. Their sole foray
into “standards” is a re-harmonized and constructed take of
“Stablemates” which sets the tone for the rest of the disc.
Energetic solos by Curtis and Almeida liven up the driving “Face
It!” while intricate interludes and passages abound in songs like
“The Composing Process.” Well conceived and constructed pieces
like “Crazy Chicken” gives some space for Zack’s drumming,
while the delightful “Afterwalk” closes the disc with some
rich trumpet blowing by Adam that reveals his admiration for Freddie Hubbard.
Full of youthful enthusiasm, the disc displays much promise for the third
generation of musicians.
