What do you mention first about Jeff Healey? That he was a great
guitarist, though blind by his first year on earth? That he died tragically of cancer a
few years ago? His unique style of guitar playing? That he veered
toward jazz towards the end of his life? Hard to say which is the top
drawer, but this disc is just a beaut if you’re a fan of 70s-styled
blues rock. Never to metallic, and with some great acoustic work,
Healey slides close to Allman Brothers territory on “Macon Georgia
Blue” and the gentle and simple “Rachel’s Song.” Strat fans will go
bonkers over the cooking “Which One” which opens the album, but what
will come as a surprise is how rich and warm Healey’s voice is. It
penetrates like a pop star, though sanded down a few millimeters, on
“My Life Story” and “I Should Have Told You.” A loss for all of us, but
at least he left a testimony, which is what we all hope to aspire on
this side of eternity.
