Trumpeter Brad Goode’s got a nice whole tone, and mixes Tin Pan Alley with originals without dropping a stitch for his fourth release. Teamed with Adrean Farrugia/p, Kelly Sill/b and Anthony Lee/dr, he modernizes up songs like “Nightingale,” “Changes” and the Louis Armstrong famed title track with some extra oomph and snap. His old soul horn milks melodies on these chestnuts, while his own compositions have a more fluid and gentle feel. “Summary” and “The River” are well delivered, with Farrugia delivering yeoman’s work on the piano throughout. Impressive material by a guy we could hear more from.
