A long time ago, seemingly in a planet very far away, Peter Gabriel was
the lead singer for a mysterious and forward looking progressive
folk-rock band named Genesis. Since his departure, the aforementioned
band turned into a pop chart machine, and Gabriel started on his solo
trek as an adventurous and searching Bilbo Baggins, creating some
intriguing music along the way. He has now become so legitimized that
he held 2 concerts in London in March 2011, with full orchestra and no
rock band, and gave serious and sanctimonious readings of songs from
his solo career. Songs like “Washing Of The Water” and the anthematic
“Solsbury Hill” come off well, but the quirkiness that was so
attractive in the beginning of his career is all but gone. All that’s
left is a nice old chap with a child’s voice; is that enough to sustain
an evening of music? I kind of lost interest half way through. Maybe I
was waiting for “Dance of the Moonlit Night” or something.
