Paquito D’Rivera Recorded
in concert at P ittsburgh’s Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild,
this disc features all of the strengths from the musician who seems to
be best carrying Dizzy Gillespies Pan American torch. Ironic, for he’s
not even a trumpet player, yet he has the same vision of mixing the spirit
and drive of bebop with the infectious lilt and rhythms of Afro Cuban
music. His rich alto leads a well grooved orchestra featuring Dave Samuels’s
vibes and Andy Narell’s Steel Pans on “Waltz For Moe”
and “Tojo” respectively. Always a treat, his clarinet is as
warm as a summer night in Boca Raton on the lovely “Serenade”
and “Song For Peace” with cellist Dana Leong. Tango gets a
nice nod on “Preludio No. 3 with Hector del Curto’s bandoneon,
while Diz gets a tip of the hat on “Con Alma.” As satisfying
as a 5 course meal, and as brisk as Cuban coffee, this one will perk you
up and keep you on your toes.
