There’s a classic scene in the old movie Shop Around The Corner, where salesman James Stewart is trying to convince his manager not to purchase 500 cigar boxes that play “Oi-Tchi-Chonya.” He summarizes the unsale-ability of the product by saying “It’s perfect for cigar smokers that love classical music, or for classical music lovers who smoke cigars.”
That’s exactly my sentiment for this disc that includes some excellent music provided by Attaliio Zanchi/b, Aaolo Fresu/tb, Roberto Cipelli/p and Phillipe Garcia/dr. The question is: do you want the poetry that’s read by Gianmaria Testa to supercede all of the instrumentation that you hear. With a voice similar to Anthony Quinn, Testa comes across like one of those old European men in too small of a bathing suit making a move on 20 somethings on the Mediterranean coast, making you search for a way to edit out the readings in order to appreciate the fine 50s Miles Davisy sounds.
