C.J. Chenier
Can’t Sit Down
World Village Records
www.worldvilalgemusic.com
By George W. Harris.
This music is about as real as it gets. Zydeco accordionist CJ Chenier
takes the mantle from his father and uncles, Clifton and Cleveland respectively,
and puts out a hard hitting boogie and blues disc. Mixing the best of
NO jive and cripple creeking back beats, Chenier teams up with Clifford
Alexander/washboard, Timothy Betts/g, Glenn Griffin/b, Michael Morris/dr
and David Macejka/perc for some get off your seat, grab a partner and
do the two step till you drop. The opening title track (didn’t the
Dovells do it back in the 60s?) gets the party started, while “Ridin’
With Uncle Cleveland” makes you feel your in a smoky low ceilinged
dive in Lafayette, LA. A couple of soulful tunes like “Trouble In
Mind” and “We Gotta Have Peace” show Chenier’s
desire for a better tomorrow and hope for eternity, while a take of “Please
Don’t Go” would make Muddy Waters green with envy. If you
wanna get out of your funk, play this a few times. Guaranteed results.
