Pianist/composer David Braid joins together with the Canadian Brass for an intriguing and sophisticated album that veers between modern classical and “jazz concerto” a la Rhapsody In Blue. Elaborate harmonics between piano and brass ebb and flow on pieces like “Interior Castles” and the two part “Resolute Bay” while the 15 minute “Yesterdays (Theme and Variations” take the Jerome Kern piece to directions and destinations previously uncharted. Lots of themes and counterpoints here, as on “Temple Heaven Walk” making this release made for attentive listening and pondering. Heady and intellectual, but not in a bad way.
