Shelly Berg & David Finck: The Deep

Pianist Shelly berg teams with bassist Dave Fink for a wonderful collection of jazz sonata duets. The mood is relaxed and simpatico, and a mix of space and gentle swing keeps the sounds flowing forward Finck takes the lead on a  pastoral “Whistling Away the Dark” and Berg’s own “For John Lewis” while supplying a confident gait on the samba’d “It Never Came to Me.” Berg delivers sounds of Satie on “3rd World” and reflectively sighs on “Dindi” while upbeat on the cabaret “Why Did I Choose You.” The team dances like Astaire and Hayworth on “Peri’s Scope” and waft across the floor on the title track. Intelligent and crafty conversations.
