The North: Slow Down (This Isn’t The Mainland)

Hawaiian locals Romain Collin/p, shawn Conley/b and Abe Lagrimas/dr form an impressive interactive trio that displays flowing originals and clever takes of covers. Of the latter, Monk’s “Light Blue” has an enjoyable peg leg to its rhythm, while Chick Corea has a version of “Humpty Dumpty” that goes form moody bass to bustling bop with a flourish. Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” is genteel and intelligently delicate, while Collin’s own “Great Ocean Road” has a graceful flow to it. Improessive brushwork is felt on “Dowsett Ave” and dainty touches on the piano is spotlighted on “Yann’s Flight.” These guys make a trip to Hawaii worth going for more than sun and surf!
